Traditionally, tableware has been made from glazed pottery, china or porcelain, or synthetic materials such as plastic and melamine. However, there are health and environmental dangers and concerns with all of these materials. Porcelain and china tableware are fine until they break, and then they are difficult if not impossible to recycle, which may harm the environment.
Plastic tableware can be harmful due to the petroleum products used and discarded in the manufacturing process, not to mention the disposal of the item into landfills at the end of its useful life.
Also of special concern is melamine. Beware of eating on cheap melamine plates as they contain substances harmful to your health. Melamine tableware can contain urea formaldehyde and may not comply with federal safety standards and specifications. In addition, melamine tableware should not be exposed to high temperatures like those in the oven and microwave. Because it is a thermoset plastic, melamine resin is difficult to recycle.
